1: Moab

I.         BACKGROUND IN MOAB

 

Introduction (1:1-7)

 

A.     Naomi, Jewish mother of two sons (Mahlon and Chilion) and her husband, Elimelech, of the tribe of Judah, move to Moab (East of Jordan) because of a famine in Bethlehem-Judah.

 

-Her sons marry Moabite girls, Orpah and Ruth. 3

 

-Husband and sons die 5

 

-She decides to return to Judah. 6

 

B.    Ruth chooses to follow Naomi and adopt her religion. 14

 

C.    Arrival in Bethlehem, Judah (19-22)

II.   RUTH MEETS BOAZ

 

A.   Ruth gleans in the field of Boaz, a wealthy near kinsman of her husband. (1-7)

 

B.   Kindness of Boaz. (8-16) Boaz discovers her and provides drink and food until the end of the harvest.

III.   BOAZ COMMITS TO MARRY RUTH 

 

A.   Naomi's advice to sleep at the feet of Boaz (1-5)

 

B.   Ruth speaks to Boaz (6-13)

 

Boaz awakes at midnight, surprised to find her at his feet. 8

 

Ruth speaks of the law concerning a kinsman providing a descendent for a childless relative. 9

 

Boaz urges Ruth to tell no one until he has been cleared of another kinsman's right to have her as wife. 10

 

Boaz is pleased and gives her grain for Naomi. 15

Boaz was son of Rahab.  Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
